Saving for their education.

Start with what the course would cost in today's money and how many years you have until it begins. A child who's 5 today starts university in about 13 years. Then see how rising fees, the savings you already have and an assumed return change the monthly amount.

A simple starting point. In your review we’ll match a plan and fund to this goal with you.

How this is calculated

Estimated cost = today's cost × (1 + inflation) ^ years.

Current savings grow at the assumed return: savings × (1 + return) ^ years.

Modelled shortfall = estimated cost − grown savings, never below zero.

Monthly saving = the shortfall spread over 12 × years end-of-month contributions earning the same return. At 0% it is the shortfall ÷ the number of months.

Assumes one lump-sum cost at the goal date and no contributions during the education period. Return assumptions are constant and for illustration only.

How the example works out.

The tool opens with a course costing RM100,000 in 10 years, with inflation and return both set to 0% and no savings yet. That works out to 120 monthly payments of RM833.33.

Already have RM100,000 set aside under the same assumptions? Then the monthly amount drops to zero. Raise the inflation figure and the target grows. Raise the return and the monthly amount falls. Try a few figures and see how the picture changes.

What we'll add in your review

The model treats the cost as one lump sum due at the end of the period, and keeps the inflation and return you choose the same every year. In a free 30-minute review, we'll add the details that make it yours:

  • Fees and charges.
  • Tax.
  • How real returns move from year to year.
  • Fees paid across several years of study rather than all at once.
  • Saving that carries on while your child is studying.
  • Which Principal funds suit the years you have.

Questions about this estimate

Can I start just by understanding the goal?

Yes. A savings estimate helps you frame the conversation without choosing a fund. There's no need to pick a product today.

What return should I put in?

Start at 0%, then try a few figures and watch the monthly amount change. In your review, we'll talk through what's realistic for the years you have.

When's the best time to start saving?

Earlier is easier. More years spread the cost over more months, so each monthly amount is smaller. Move the years slider and you'll see it straight away.
