Give your money a job to do.

A child who's 5 today starts university in about 13 years. Left in a savings account, that money can quietly lose ground to rising prices. A unit trust with Principal puts it to work for a goal like that, and we'll walk you through how it works before you invest a single ringgit.

What a unit trust really is.

You and many other investors pool your money into one fund. The fund managers at Principal Asset Management invest it in shares, bonds or cash, depending on the fund, and you own a slice of it in units. There are Syariah-compliant funds too, if that matters to you.

The value of each unit moves with the fund's investments, day by day. When you need the money, you sell your units at that day's price.

Each fund's prospectus is registered with the Securities Commission Malaysia, and we'll read it with you, page by page.

  • Start with what it's for.

Once you know the goal and the date, every other choice gets easier.

  • Your child's education

Put a fixed amount aside every month, years before you pay the first semester fees.

  • Retirement

If you're 35 and hope to stop work at 60, you have 25 years to build something of your own alongside your EPF.

  • Your own savings

A house deposit or a cushion for later, from money you won't need for a few years.

Small amounts, every month.

You don't need a big lump sum to begin. Plenty of people invest a fixed amount each month, the way they'd pay a bill.

The same amount every month buys more units when prices are low and fewer when they're high. It evens out what you pay, so you don't have to guess the right moment to start.

Say you put in RM200 a month for 13 years, from when your child is 5 until they turn 18. That's RM31,200 of your own money, set aside bit by bit for one clear goal.

Run your own numbers.

Put in today's cost of a course and the years you have. The return starts at 0%, so you can try your own figures and see how the monthly amount changes.

A simple starting point. In your review we’ll match a plan and fund to this goal with you.

How this is calculated

Estimated cost = today's cost × (1 + inflation) ^ years.

Current savings grow at the assumed return: savings × (1 + return) ^ years.

Modelled shortfall = estimated cost − grown savings, never below zero.

Monthly saving = the shortfall spread over 12 × years end-of-month contributions earning the same return. At 0% it is the shortfall ÷ the number of months.

Assumes one lump-sum cost at the goal date and no contributions during the education period. Return assumptions are constant and for illustration only.

A simple estimate to start a conversation. Bring your numbers to a free review and we’ll build the full picture with you.

The right fund for you.

Funds that hold more shares usually move more and aim for more growth. Funds with more bonds or cash usually move less, and grow more gently.

So we match the fund to when you'll need the money, and to how comfortable you are with ups and downs along the way.

We'll also show you every fee up front: usually a sales charge when you buy and an annual management fee taken from the fund, sometimes a trustee fee or a switching charge as well.

What we'll go through together.

Every unit trust comes with a prospectus and a product highlights sheet. The highlights sheet is short, and we'll go through it with you, covering:

  • What your money is invested in, and how much its price can move.
  • Every fee and charge you pay, including the sales charge and the annual management fee.
  • How you sell your units, and how long the money takes to reach you.
  • How the fund tends to behave, in plain words.
  • Whether the fund suits your goal and the years you have.

Questions people ask us.

How much do I need to start?

It depends on the fund. Each one sets its own minimum in the prospectus, and we'll show you the real figure, not a guess.

Will the value go up and down?

Yes, that's normal for any investment. Investing a fixed amount every month, over many years, helps smooth out the ups and downs, and we'll pick a fund that suits how long you're investing for.

Is it like a fixed deposit?

Not quite. A fixed deposit pays an agreed rate for a set period. A unit trust doesn't fix the return: its value moves with the fund's investments, so it suits goals that are years away. Many families keep both.

Who can advise me on a fund?

In Malaysia, a unit trust consultant has to be registered with the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FIMM). Ask to see the authorisation card. A good consultant will be glad to show you.

Unit trust prices can go up and down. Please read the prospectus and product highlights sheet before you invest.

What would you like to look after?

Bring one goal. We'll do the sums.

School fees, retirement or a house deposit. Tell us what you're saving for and we'll show you what a monthly plan could look like, with every fee explained up front.
